The way it all came about…

"These drawings are not studies – they were never meant to be end products. They are ephemeral, imperfect scribbles artists draw while talking on the phone or sitting in a meeting, unpremeditated and intuitive. They can never be described as turning out well or badly; actually, they are never failures because from the outset, success has never been their goal. They are merely traces of an intuitive process.

This is what fascinated me when investigating doodles; their possible forms, the artists’ attitude towards them - the artists I began to seek out to expand my little Novo Mesto show - and the relation between the intuitive and the planned in art… And what is more: How to put on view something that has not been produced with a public presentation in a gallery in mind? How to talk the artists into putting aside their (unquestionably wonderful) artists’ books and showing me their notes instead – and the doodles on them? And what to do about that part of the production of doodles that is – in correspondence with its value (or rather, lack thereof) – not kept but discarded?

Now what?

These were the questions I had to delve even more deeply when I took my search for doodlers a step further, prompted by my intent to add new depth and dimension to the whole story for the Nova Gorica show. This exhibition presents the doodling output of nine artists of different generations and creative points of departure. There could be many more, of course, but I decided on a combination of diverse artistic approaches and processes in keeping with the exhibition venue."
