World of Art. School of Contemporay Art
Presentation by Barbara Borčić

Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 7pm
Library of the Townhouse Gallery, Downtown, Cairo, Egypt

Svet umetnosti

Barbara Borčić will talk about the World of Art, School for Contemporary Art, which has been operating within SCCA-Ljubljana since 1997. Conceived in yearly cycles and composed of a course for curators with a final exhibition, a seminar in writing, a series of lectures and a yearly anthology, the World of Art School aims to establish the necessary mechanisms for a reflective operation in the art world.

The presentation will be accompanied by extensive visual material.

Barbara Borčić is an art historian and the director of SCCA-Ljubljana, Center for Contemporary Arts. She also works as a free-lance curator and publicist with a focus on alternative art, performance and video. She has participated in numerous international symposia, exhibitions and festivals. As the director of ŠKUC Gallery in Ljubljana (1982-1985), she was involved in the alternative art scene in Ljubljana in the 80s, contributing to the most widespread cultural movement until today in Slovenia and developing an exciting cultural and social practice. During that time, she was involved in the organization of numerous exhibitions, performances, multimedia projects, concerts, symposia and round tables, all reflecting on events and production. Within the frame of SCCA-Ljubljana she co-curated the exhibition projects Urbanaria and Media in Media, led Videodokument: Video Art in Slovenia 1969-1998 (a documentation and research project), Videospotting (a curated video program) and Internet Portfolio (a curated web project). She co-edited the research projects/publications Manifesta in Our Backyard and What Is to Be Done with 'Balkan Art'? and is a consultant of World of Art, School of Contemporary Art. Since 2005 she has been working in the field of contemporary audiovisual archives, conceiving DIVA Station (a physical and web archive of video art).

The presentation is organized in collaboration with the Townhouse Gallery.
