The World of Art, School for Curatorial Practices and Critical Writing was introduced in 1996/1997 and is still the sole programme in Slovenia aimed towards practical and theoretical education in the field of curatorial practices.
Since 2011 the school programme consist of two years. Programme was conceptualised on the basis of years of research of various curatorial programmes, analysis of curatorial practices, consultations with national and international experts, an evaluation of the past programme and consideration of effective models of education in contemporary visual art and theories.
School is run by Miha Kelemina (head of the programme), Asta Vrečko and Jasna Jernejšek (programme co-workers) with numerous external collaborators, lecturers and tutors.
The school has two years (October 2018 – June 2019, September 2019 – June 2020) and consists of several modules.
The first year (October 2018 – June 2019) is dedicated to the acquisition of art-historical, theoretical and methodological knowledge and skills. The lectures are focused on learning about art system, cultural policies, exhibition history and history of curatorial practices. Seminars in the first year are dedicated to critical writing, analysis of artworks and theory. Curatorial Research concerns practical aspects of curator’s work.
The second year (September 2019 – June 2020) is dedicated to critical and curatorial studies and practice. The programme includes regular meetings with tutors, studio visits, curatorial mapping, seminars, research work, and practica on the practical work of the curator. Through weekly meetings with tutors Alenka Gregorič, curator and director of City Art Gallery, and Miran Mohar, artist and member of IRWIN collective, the participants will conceptualise and prepare an exhibition of contemporary art and its accompanying events.
