Eva Bevec has always loved collecting things – objects, words, images – which has gradually become a central part of her art practice. Lately, she has been collecting utilitarian photographs and images that catch her eye as she comes across them online. In this way, she creates her own incidental digital archive of screenshots and downloaded files that fill her hard drives, folders and desktops.
Into the jumbo triptych, she has incorporated a screenshot from a YouTube video demonstrating how to cut up a chicken, a screenshot from the Tinder app (used with permission of the person portrayed), and an image of bird-protection stickers designed to prevent birds from flying into windows from an online shop. We are constantly surrounded by such images and create them ourselves, but do not usually pay much aesthetic attention to them, as they are primarily created and circulated for the simple purpose of conveying information. Within the context of the exhibition, they take on a new role: freed from their original function, their pictorial nature and juxtaposition address the viewer’s inclination to make connections and search for meaning. This coincides with the artist’s fascination with the strange and the absurd as an integral part of everyday banality, which is also her main source of inspiration.
Lucija Lunder, curator of the exhibition, will talk to the artists at the opening.
