World of Art | 19th Generation | Public lecture

Through case studies, the lecture will unveil some of the key theoretical and conceptual premises of memory studies and shed light on the impact of this research field on contemporary artistic and curatorial practices. It will present memory as both an object and a result of work simultaneously embedded in the attention economy and contemporary media ecology. Furthermore, memory will be discussed as a building block for imagining the future, which cannot be separated from its medium and its technical dimension. The lecture will thus constitute a conceptual intervention that will help the audience understand the direct and indirect effects of (curatorial and other) practices of remembering and forgetting.

The lecture is part of the accompanying programme of the final exhibition of the 19th generation of the School for Curatorial Practices and Critical Writing World of Art 2022/24 Restoring from a Void. Dr Natalija Majsova is an associate professor and researcher at the Department of Cultural Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. Her research interests include memory studies, cultural theories, film studies, and media archaeology. She authored numerous articles in foreign and Slovenian scientific journals and two books on space, film and utopias. Her latest book, Soviet SF Cinema and the Space Age: Memorable Futures, was published by Lexington Books (2021). She is currently leading a Slovenian-Croatian research project on mnemonic aesthetics and strategies in popular culture MEMPOP (2023 – 2026) and a research project on remembering the early digital age TECHNOPST (2023 – 2025).
