The human body is essentially a material extension of a person’s being. At the same time, as a biological entity, it is also a kind of clock whose changes visually indicate the passing of the time available to us and remind us, through discomfort and complications, of the inevitable end of all living beings.

This natural, almost simple reality is quickly displaced by numerous products and solutions of the contemporary world, which, for a certain price, promise at least an apparent escape from the inevitable. The fear of unavoidable decay is concealed by modifications that partially suppress temporal changes and outwardly slow down the ageing process.

In his work, the artist juxtaposes his relationship to his own body and his reflections on today’s consumer-oriented perception of it. In consumer society, the individual is alienated from their body, as they are reduced to a collage of flesh in which every piece becomes an investment. The artist raises the question of how we can face our own mortality more honestly and to what extent we (un)consciously shy away from it.

Oskar Slabe (1996) holds a Master’s degree in Graphic Design from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO) in Ljubljana. His practice primarily focuses on the field of graphic design and animation, in which he combines visual imagery with elements of humour. His work explores various processes of consumer society that shape our daily lives. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions with his art installations and fine art prints, including at the DobraVaga gallery and Y Gallery, and has held solo shows at the Peti štuk gallery and Jalla Jalla.
